From Experience to Innovation
My name is Safir Ahmad. I'm the founder of Safir Innovations. After a motorcycle accident in 2022 I became a full-time wheelchair user. I have experience using both manual and powered wheelchairs, and this made me notice a problem that can easily be overlooked: cold conditions can make everyday wheelchair use more difficult.
Wheelchair users can spend long periods in the same position, with their hands and body in contact with parts of the wheelchair. On manual wheelchairs, this can also include repeated contact with cold push rims.
Existing products such as heated clothing, blankets and hand warmers can help, but they are separate products and are not designed as part of the wheelchair itself.
This led me to develop a patent-pending integrated heating system for powered and manual wheelchairs.
The idea is to provide controlled heating at important wheelchair contact points, including areas such as the joystick, armrests, seat, backrest, footrests and, for manual wheelchairs, the push rims.
The main focus is function and safety in cold conditions.
This project started from a problem I experience personally. My ambition is to turn that lived experience into a practical innovation that could improve wheelchair function and safety for many people.
